The home of the sage are the places around the Mediterranean Sea. Now it is cultivated everywhere in sunny places.Since ancient times, the leaves of sage have been regarded as symbols of eternal life and healing. Salvia is derived from the Latin salvare = to heal.
In aromatherapy only the cultivated sage (salvia officinalis) is used because it has the higher proportion of essential oil. It grows to a height of 60 centimetres, its stems are woody at the bottom and herbaceously covered with elongated egg-shaped leaves at the top. Its lilac lip flowers are arranged in whorls.
