Description of medicinal herbs
The fact that sage is not just an herb for the kitchen is actually already revealed by its Latin name: Salvia officinalis. "Salvia" is the Latin word for "heal", the term "officinalis" refers to the recognised medicinal effect.
The essential oils contained in sage, which contain the valuable substances thujone, cineole and camphor, are primarily responsible for the positive healing effect. In addition, sage leaves contain tannins such as rosmarinic acid, bitter substances such as carnosol and flavonoids and terpenes. Because of these ingredients and its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, sage is considered an effective remedy for a wide variety of colds and gum infections. Due to its astringent effect, sage can also help with hot flushes and heavy sweating. Due to the phytoestrogens contained in the medicinal plant, it is also able to alleviate other hormone-related menopausal complaints such as mood swings or anxiety. Sage can even be used to support gastrointestinal problems such as flatulence, cramps, bloating, abdominal pain or diarrhoea.
Use and dosage of sage
To make a sage tea for internal as well as external use, simply pour 1 tablespoon of dried sage leaves over a cup of hot water and strain after 10 minutes. To treat gastrointestinal complaints, drink a cup of freshly prepared tea half an hour before meals. To treat night sweats, drink a cup of cooled tea 2 hours before going to bed. When cold, the tea can also be used as a mouthwash or for gargling.
